Geographical Location

  • Oromia National Regional State is one of the regional states in the FDRE of Ethiopia.  
  • The region is geographically located between 30 24’ 20’’ to 100 23’26’’ North latitudes and 340 07’37’’ to 420 58’51’’ East longitude.  
  • Except with Tigrai Regional state, Oromia Regional state shares national borderlines with all Ethiopia regional states.
  •  The region also shares international boundary lines with Sudan (66km) and Kenya (521km) in west and in the south respectively.
  • Oromia is one of the most populous regional states and is located in the very heart of the country.  
  • The capital city of the Region is Finfinne (Addis Ababa), which is also the capital city of Ethiopia.

Climate

  • The Region is broadly divided in to three agro-climatic zones:
  • Dry climatic – the hot arid, semi – arid, dry sub humid climate
  • Tropical rainy climate – the tropical humid and tropical sub- humid climates and
  • Temperate rainy climate, the warm temperate, warm temperate humid & cool high land climates
  • The Region has four seasonal divisions with varied climatic conditions, namely: summer, autumn, winter and spring. Summer and autumn are heavy rainfall season while, winter and spring are   less / no rainfall seasons .In another words, winter and spring are more or less dry seasons

Language

  • Afan Oromo is the official language of Oromia National Regional State. 
  • It is also the most widely spoken language in the country. 
  • Other languages such as Amharic, Guragigna, Somali, Tigrigna and many more are also spoken within the region. 
  • English is the medium of instructions in high schools and medium of communications in international businesses.

 

Religion

  • Major religions in the country are Christianity and Islam. 
  • But there are a number of traditional religions as well. 
  • One prominent feature of Ethiopia is religious tolerance among different religious groups
  • Ethiotelecom, which is state-owned, has been the sole telecom service provider in the country.
  • By the reform undertaken by government of Ethio-Telecom through partial privatization the Safaricom begun the service
  • The main road network that radiates from Addis Ababa city is located in the Centre of Oromia Regional State. This has a great advantage for investors who want to use the important regional and international transport hub. The International highways also pass through Oromia Region, connecting neighboring countries like Kenya, Djibouti and Sudan.
  • With more than 63 destinations to cities such as Brussels,Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, Washington DC, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Bangkok, Beijing, Beirut, Dubai, Guangzhou, Jeddah, Kuwait, Mumbai, Delhi, Sana’a, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos, Lusaka, Accra, Dakar and many big cities, 
  • The Ethiopian Airlines provides a great Comparative advantage for Oromia Regional State since from the flights depart from Bole International Air Port located in the heart of the regional state.
  • Oromia has high water resource potential. There is huge run-off and underground water. 
  • There are eight major rivers which can be utilized for hydroelectric power and irrigation generation in the Regional State of Oromia.
  • The Modjo dry port has a great advantage for investors to ensure efficient, cost effective and reliable import and export movement of cargo to and from the ports of neighboring countries like Djibouti.
  • The country has huge hydropower generation potential of 45,000 MW while the geothermal power generation capacity is estimated at 50,000MW. The country is also endowed with other sources of generating electricity such as wind, solar etc.
  • The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam with electricity generation capacity of 6500 MW began
